Founded in 1903 by Berkshire paper manufacturer and philanthropist Zenas Crane, the Berkshire Museum has spent more than 120 years inspiring curiosity through art, history, science, and natural history. For generations of local families, it's been more than just a museum, it's where countless school field trips sparked a fascination with the natural world, where kids marveled at The World in Miniature, shuffled through the dark gallery to watch their white shoelaces glow beneath luminescent minerals, and eagerly made a beeline for the aquarium.
Beginning Wednesday, July 29, the Berkshire Museum will welcome visitors back following a year-long transformational renovation that honors that rich legacy while ushering in an exciting new chapter. Thoughtfully refreshed galleries, engaging new exhibitions, and a spectacular new state-of-the-art aquarium ensure there's plenty for returning visitors to rediscover—while giving today's children the chance to create memories of their own.
New Experiences to Discover
At the heart of the renovation is a state-of-the-art aquarium, nearly twice the size of the original and the only one of its kind in the Berkshires. The new space features a glass walkway that mimics flowing water and is home to dozens of terrestrial and aquatic species, including Caribbean reef octopus, moon jellyfish, a bearded dragon, and many more.
Families can also explore Cabinets of Curiosities, an engaging new exhibition featuring themed displays of fascinating objects from the museum's permanent collection. Organized around subjects such as currency, jewelry, writing, and weapons, the exhibition invites visitors to discover unexpected connections between artifacts.
In Immersed in Nature, art, natural history, and rotating displays come together to explore our relationship with the natural world through engaging exhibits designed for visitors of all ages.

Beloved Favorites Return
Longtime museum favorites haven't gone anywhere—they've simply been refreshed for a new generation.
The beloved World in Miniature returns with thoughtful upgrades, including a stunning constellation display above the central globe that connects each miniature habitat to its place on Earth.
The Paleontology and Geology Gallery once again showcases the museum's impressive collection of rocks and minerals, including the glowing luminescent specimens that have captivated Berkshire schoolchildren for decades. It's this balance of familiar and new that makes the museum's reopening feel so special. Parents and grandparents can revisit the exhibits they remember while introducing children to experiences that may become some of their own favorite childhood memories.

Don't Miss These Limited-Time Exhibitions
Visitors reopening week will also have the opportunity to experience two special exhibitions on view only through September 13.
Voices of Rebellion: Berkshires' Revolutionary Legacy explores Berkshire County's role in the American Revolution through the stories of women, Black and Indigenous people, and other historically marginalized communities. The exhibition includes dozens of artifacts from the museum's collection, including a rare July 1776 printing of the Declaration of Independence.
Art lovers won't want to miss Mediterranea: American Art from the Graham D. Williford Collection, featuring 73 paintings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that celebrate the landscapes, cultures, and beauty of the Mediterranean through the eyes of American artists.
These exhibitions offer a unique opportunity to experience something new before the museum's next exciting chapter unfolds.

The museum has planned a full lineup of events to celebrate its reopening:
- Wednesday, July 29 | 10 a.m.–5 p.m. – Berkshire Museum Reopening Day. Be among the first visitors through the doors, explore the transformed galleries, and witness the ribbon cutting at 10 a.m.
- Wednesday, July 29 | 5–6:15 p.m. – Reimagining the Berkshire Museum Panel Discussion. Learn about the vision and collaboration behind the renovation during this free public program.
- Saturday, August 1 | 11 a.m.–Noon – Mark White: A Look at Mediterranea. Exhibition curator Dr. Mark White shares insights into the featured collection. Free with museum admission.
- Friday, August 7 | 5:30–7:30 p.m. – Sip, See, Celebrate. Enjoy an evening reception featuring drinks, light bites, and the opportunity to explore the refreshed museum after hours.
- Saturday, August 8 | 10 a.m.–5 p.m. – Community Reopening Celebration Day. Admission is free all day thanks to Greylock Federal Credit Union. Families can enjoy guided tours, hands-on activities, an inaugural science show, and full access to the museum's galleries and aquarium.
- Saturday, August 8 | 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. – Award-winning children's author Ty Allan Jackson will host a free reading and Q&A, sharing stories and encouraging young readers and writers.

Beginning July 29, the Berkshire Museum will be open Friday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closing on Thursdays beginning August 6 and on select holidays throughout the year.
