What do you do when you're struck down by the flu?

By Kelly Bevan McIlquham, Publisher, Berkshires Macaroni Kid January 17, 2018

Last week I was totally knocked off my feet by the flu. Literally, on the couch, no energy, feeling as if I was wearing lead weights on every part of my body, off my feet — until Monday. Even now I'm still struggling to get my energy back, but I'm starting to feel much better.

While I was sick, I put out a call on Facebook for people's best flu remedies and I thought I'd share them with you. I'm leaning towards all those that recommended just sleep and fluids because "the flu is a virus" and there's nothing you can do so you just have to wait it out. But maybe one of these will work for you should you get the flu. My best advice though, "Get the flu shot." It doesn't save you from every strand, but my husband swears by it.

  1. Sleep. Fluids. Sleep.
  2. REST!!!!
  3. Tons of rest. Yes lots of fluids. I also recommend Zicam! You can get it in spray, gummies or I think liquid. It reduces the amount of time you're sick
  4. Maybe try this? (With a Facebook screenshot that recommended Oscillococcinum and Sambucol Black Elderberry per package directions)
  5. Sleep and fluid.
  6. Detox bath (hot water, Epsom salts, baking soda, lavender essential oil), coconut water or recharge for electrolytes, fire cider sipped throughout the day.
  7.  Goldenmilk (turmeric, coconut oil, black pepper, sweetener warmed in coconut milk), tea as well.
  8. My mom (a nurse) has said that fire cider has been working for people.
  9. The best over the counter stuff was the fire cider and the Alka-Seltzer severe cold and flu stuff. The tablets you dissolve in warm water and drink like tea.
  10. Wash your hands, have hubby disinfect every knob, handle, steering wheel, light switches, etc. And you need Netflix and tea and tissues and to be pampered!!
  11. Lots of Vitamin C, mainly OJ
  12. Bone broth and sleep!
  13. I swear by my fire cider. But I think taking in advance may help. I also like to gargle with Listerine it kills germs. It also soothes a sore scratchy throat. Honey warm water and fresh squeezed lemon is also comforting to drink and helps keep you hydrated.
  14. Rest. lots of water. rest. there's nothing that can cure the flu. except rest and fluids. its a virus that has to run it's course.
  15. Sleep, sleep, sleep!!!!
  16. Tamiflu helps If you get a prescription from the doctor. I think it only works within 48 hours of symptoms? Call your doctor and ask!
  17. Sleep and fluids.
  18. Tea, tea, tv, sofa and naps all day long
  19. Call MiMi  (my godmother, a retired nurse)
  20. Get the Tamiflu!! And ginger and honey in tea.
  21. Just pamper yourself and ride it out😢
  22. Not much you can do but DRINK and rest. I also swear by Vicks.
  23. A nice bath, lots of sleep, and being spoiled by your family....and the trick to using Vicks that I SWEAR BY is actually putting on the bottom of your feet and covering them with socks for bed....don't ask why it works, but trust me (it works for me and my kids like magic!)
  24. Beverages, sleep,  Vitamin C and zinc...just plain old zinc, not Zicam
  25. Get on Juice Plus. Veggie capsules from the heavens. It will help boost your immune system.
  26. I think the best thing to get over your flu... is to not come near me.
  27. A wonderful remedy called chaga mushroom. It grows locally.
