Berkshire County Camp Spotlight โ€” Berkshire HorseWorks' Ranch Life 101

By Berkshires Macaroni Kid March 5, 2023

Berkshire HorseWorks invites you to celebrate your inner cowgirl or cowboy this summer at the ranch in Richmond! Get ready for a fun, memorable, and, purposeful experience as your children immerse themselves in Ranch Life 101 — where every day presents a variety of different ranch experiences in which to participate.

Each day is very active, moving from a variety of HorseCentric life skills and outdoor activities like hiking with horses, grooming, ranch chores, scavenger hunts, storytelling, trail clearing, journaling, fence building, hay baling, horsemanship, arts and crafts, organic gardening, and any number of other activities required on a working ranch. Each animal at Berkshire HorseWorks has its own distinct personality and individuals will get to know all of them. Your young adventurers can explore their individual expression in a natural environment alongside their equine friends.Through daily experiential activities facilitated by advanced certified Eagala Equine specialists, educators and other wellness practitioners, individuals will learn not only how to to take care of the horses but also how to take care of themselves and each other. The Eagala modality — using horses in ground-based activities to help achieve personal development goals — is woven throughout everything that they do.

Lessons are tailored to enhance self-esteem, creativity, personal growth and responsibility, listening and leadership skills, empowerment, resiliency, and much more. Sessions are kept small so that everyone gets individualized attention. Attendance here allows your child to be part of the Berkshire HorseWorks family and small group sizes allows the team to customize activities based on individual and age-appropriate interests.

Ranch Life 101, co-facilitated by early education specialist Chris Ciepiela and Eagala advanced certified equine specialist and Berkshire Horse Works founder/Executive Director Hayley Sumner, is an authentic ranch adventure that provides a platform in nature for life skill development as children engage in developmentally appropriate experiences. Through the powerful interaction with horses in both ground-based and mounted activities, participants will learn how to develop relationships with the herd of horses and donkeys which, in turn, will grow their own ability to apply new skills to experiences outside the ranch. In addition to the Eagala- based activities, children will have the opportunity to learn basic riding skills, burn some energy doing yoga or trail walking with their equine partners, practice team building while engaging in ranch “chores”, and use their imaginations and creativity during innovative nature- based arts and crafts. Practicing patience, growing friendships, building trust, developing confidence, and cultivating responsibility, mentor/mentee skills and respect will all be explored. Structured for all ages and abilities, Ranch Life 101 is a unique opportunity to learn and play side by side with the beautiful therapy herd of horses and donkeys.

Berkshire HorseWorks is a safe and positive environment, where kids can still be kids, but have the opportunities to learn exciting new skills that will contribute to making your child more confident, self-sufficient, and better able to cope with new situations. This summer, whether on the ground or in the saddle, Ranch Life 101 at Berkshire HorseWorks will lay down roots of resilience in a fun-filled, activity-packed day at the ranch.
