By Berkshires Macaroni Kid September 6, 2023

LEE — The Lee Youth Commission welcomes a new addition to the annual Lee Founders' Day Weekend festivities—the very first Lee Skate Park Competition. Set to take place on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at noon, the event promises a thrilling spectacle of skill, creativity, and community spirit at the Lee Athletic Field, situated at 120 Housatonic Street.

The Lee Skate Park Competition encourages individuals of all ages, skill levels (including novices), and wheel preferences to participate in thrilling one-minute runs on Lee's dynamic skate park loop. From skateboards, scooters, bikes/BMX, roller skates to roller blades, every wheel is encouraged to roll onto the scene and show off their tricks. This unique event is not only a celebration of talent but also an embodiment of inclusivity welcoming all to revel in the joys of extreme sports.

"We are beyond excited to introduce the Lee Skate Park Competition to this year's Lee Founders' Day Weekend," stated Josh Bloom, a member of the Lee Youth Commission. "This event encapsulates the spirit of community engagement and healthy competition that embodies the essence of Lee. We're looking forward to witnessing the incredible talents of our participants and providing an unforgettable experience for both contestants and spectators."

"As a skateboarder who has grown up in Lee, the Lee Skate Park Competition becoming a reality is a dream come true. Seeing my idea evolve from a simple concept to a full-fledged event is incredibly meaningful and demonstrates the positive impact of civic engagement. This competition not only showcases the talents of skaters from all walks of life but also emphasizes the significance of providing a safe and welcoming space for my peers and younger kids to express themselves." — Nico Resca, High School Student Member of the Lee Youth Commission

Generosity and support from esteemed co-sponsors have allowed the Lee Youth Commission to infuse the competition with enticing prizes and expert judging. A heartfelt thank you goes to the co-sponsors: The Library Skate Shop in Great Barrington, The Garden skate shop in Pittsfield, Off of It Gallery in Lee, Airtime Clothing that specializes in motocross and BMX apparel, Berkshire Roller Girls, and the Kiwanis Club of Lee.

"As a skate shop owner and parent, I recognize the transformative power of skateboarding as not just a sport, but a way of life. Supporting skateboarding in the Berkshires is not only a responsibility but also a privilege for us at the Library Skate Shop. The Lee Skate Park Competition is an embodiment of our commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity and growth. We're particularly thrilled to provide a platform for new, inexperienced, and young skaters, as they represent the future of this dynamic community." — Damon Vorce, Owner of the Library Skate Shop in Great Barrington
